The Outdoor City Weekender itinerary for sports obsessives

Live for the outdoors and ride, run or climb all the time? This is the Weekender edit for you. Grab the chance to try a night run, jump on a bike, or boulder to your heart's content. Be wowed by the big bike races, be gripped by outdoor films from round the world at ShAFF, watch the best climb at CWIF and party hard all weekend!

FRIDAY 9 MARCH:

Mend Our Mountains: Make One Million Launch
Time: 6pm - 7pm
Location: Showroom Cafe
Join broadcaster Mary-Ann Ochota for drinks and nibbles to celebrate the launch of Mend Our Mountains: Make One Million, a campaign aiming to raise £1 million for vital path repair projects in Britian's National Parks – including the Great Ridge in the Peak District.

Night Run
Time: 7:30pm
Location: meet at The Workstation
Get your high-vis on and join the folk from Up & Running and Alpkit for your choice of two routes: a 7-mile run taking in green spaces around the city centre or a more leisurely 4-miler that also goes to green spaces but avoids steep hills. Head torches provided – you can even take them home with you!

Run Films 2 at ShAFF

Stay fully immersed in the world of running with this programme of inspiring short films following runners on their adventures.

The Climbing Works
If you're too pumped up for the cinema, you can boulder to your heart's content as late as 10pm at The Climbing Works. You might even get a sneak peek at what will be taking place on Saturday when the Climbing Works International Festival (CWIF) starts.

SATURDAY 10 MARCH:

Sporteering Polaris Challenge
Time: 9:30am-2pm
Location: start at the Peace Gardens at any time
Got wheels and fancy a challenge? Join Polaris Bikewear's first Sporteering Cycle Challenge: a test of navigation and creativity and not just speed, that involved participants planning their own route round the city, using a free app to collect points and win prizes.

Saucony Hill Sprint Challenge
Time: 2pm
Location: Ecclesall Woods
Take part in this challenge hosted by running footwear brand Saucony, as part of the Big Running Weekend at Ecclesall Woods.

Howard Street Dual
Time: 4-7pm
Location: Howard Street
Watch riders race each other on this purpose built course in the heart of the city. The dual format will guarantee thrills as the afternoon sessions whittle riders down to a grand final. Expect noise, jumps and some of the best riders going for it big. Not to be missed.

Spirit of Adventure Films 4 at ShAFF
Time: 7pm
Location: Showroom Cinema
A trio of films, covering a swimmer's journey from city to sea, an underwater photographer who spends his time freediving with orcas, and a sailor on a mission to complete the first round-the-world tour alone on a catamaran without cockpit.

BMC #SMASH: the ShAFF & CWIF after party
Time: 9:30pm-2:30am
Location: Showroom Bar
With a big weekend, comes a big party. Join the runners, riders, climbers and adventurers for a social in the cinema’s bar.

SUNDAY 11 MARCH:

The Magnificent Seven
Time: 8:30am-11:40am
Location: various positions on route
Seven Hills, 130 riders. Get into position to watch cyclists attack some of The Outdoor City’s most gruelling hills, in a 26-mile route that includes over 4,200 foot of climbing. Head to the spectator hub at Bradfield, where the race starts at 8:30am and ends around 11:40am.

Cotic Mountain Bike Demo Day
Time: 10am-4pm
Location: Lady Cannings Plantation
Try out the famous Lady Cannings MTB course on the edge of the Peak District and the city. The Cotic team will be on hand to help with bike choices, setups and expert advice.

Scavenger Second Hand Kit Sale
Time: 8am-5pm
Location: The Workstation
Whatever your preferred outdoor pursuit, bring along the kit you no longer need and Scavenger will try and sell it for you. Open for donations from 8am, for shopping from 10am.

Alan Hinkes: Feature at ShAFF
Time: 2:15pm
Location: Showroom Cinema
Alan Hinkes is the first and only Briton to climb all fourteen 8000m peaks. Be wowed by the mountaineer's achievements in this celebratory documentary.

The Rab CWIF Final
Time: 6:30pm
Location: The Climbing Works
Getting a seat at The Rab CWIF final is a challenge in itself. We recommend getting down early to see the action up close and get in prime position for all the free giveaways that come from the supporting brands. A big screen is on site, so late arrivals can watch the action and soak up the atmosphere if they miss out on a good seat.
