Ever wish you could make more time for exercise in your life? Want to start off with something gentle and accessible? Step Out Sheffield runs a varied programme of walks for health, all across the city, every week. Walks are fun, free and take place all year round - even during the school holidays. Walking for health is a great way to meet people, reduce stress and get fit!
The largest volunteer led group in the entire national Walking For Health scheme, Step Out Sheffield is run by a community of over 120 dedicated, friendly volunteers who help new walkers to get started. In fact, the Sheffield walking scheme has been so successful that it won the Innovation Award from The Ramblers Association in 2017.
With 25 walks a week to choose from, you can ramble round Handsworth or saunter through Ecclesall Woods. Walks range in duration from half an hour to a full hour, follow an easy pace, and include time for rests. They’re ideal for people new to exercise or just beginning to get active again after recovering from surgery or illness.
Around 2,000 people took part in Sheffield Health Walks in June last year. Altogether, the total distance covered by all participants added up to 3,000 miles (the average distance walked per person was 1.5 miles per walk): the distance from Sheffield to Tashkent, the capital city of Uzbekistan. This year, Step Out Sheffield want to go further.
